Drum & Chant Workshop with Jim Donovan
The Drum & Chant Workshop ---- Explained in 2 Minutes
Stress is a BIG problem. These days people are experiencing pandemic levels of stress that, if left unchecked, can turn into a host of undesirable health problems like heart disease and stroke. Given the seriousness of this problem, it makes good sense to know some effective ways you can use right away to naturally manage your own stress.
What many people don’t realize is that the act of creating sound is one of the most powerful, natural and free ways that people have used for centuries to combat stress. Like taking an aspirin for a headache, sound creation can also be used as a kind of antidote. The best part is that it is easy and takes just minutes to work. The purpose of the Drum & Chant workshop is to show you how to do it.
Sandy is a mom of three who also works as a nurse at a local hospital. Sandy’s patients love her because she listens and cares for them as if they were her own family. Sandy happily gives much of her attention and energy to others which makes her feel both satisfied, yet depleted. A few months ago, Sandy’s hospital reduced nursing staff due to budget cuts and Sandy’s job demands had grown in intensity. Having more demands than ever on her time, Sandy began to notice herself becoming more impatient and irritable with both her patients as well as her family at home. To make matters worse, even though she went to bed feeling tired, she had trouble falling and staying asleep as her mind raced from thing to thing. Sandy knew that something had to change-- and soon.
On the recommendation of a close friend, Sandy decided to sign up for one of Jim Donovan’s Drum & Chant workshops. Her friend kept talking about how good she’s learned how to help herself feel after attending one a few months ago. Though Sandy knew nothing about drumming or chanting and was skeptical about how it could possibly help someone like her, she trusted her friend and decided to give it a shot. Sandy knew that she loved music and would often sing at the top of her lungs to the radio in the car when she was by herself.
What Sandy didn’t realize until working with Jim was that the actual act of making sound like drumming and vocalizing, helps the brain to release feel good chemicals called oxytocin. During the workshop, Sandy quickly found herself feeling relaxed and at ease. She particularly enjoyed the pressure-free and beginner friendly environment. She even met several intersting people!
Jim invited Sandy and the group to think of stress like weeds in a garden. In order for the plants in your garden to stay healthy and vibrant, you need to remove the weeds that compete with your vegetables for resources. Sound essentially helps you to weed stress from your body by helping it to turn on what is called the “relaxation response” in the brain. Science tells us that when your body is more relaxed the easier it becomes to heal itself. In essence, the less weeds you have in your garden, the healthier your plants become.
By the end of the workshop, Sandy’s mind was crystal clear, her body was relaxed and she felt happier than she had in months. That night she had the best night of sleep she’d had in months. The Drum & Chant workshop was just the experience she had been looking for. Now when stress came calling, she had the antidote.

What people are saying about The Drum and Chant Workshop
could drink from the purest source of water on earth on the most
beautiful day you'd ever seen, and it would still not bring peace to
your soul like spending an evening at one of Jim's workshops. Even if
you've never drummed before, he's such a gifted instructor that you will
be amazed at how easy it really is to drum, chant, and bond with
like-minded spirits. It's a uniquely moving and unforgettable
experience." -Andrew Patton, State College, PA
"Jim Donovan, our amazing teacher, has encouraged and allowed us to find our voice through drumming. In the "The Ecstatic Drum and Chant :: Transformation Workshop" workshops. It is amplified by adding our own voices to that of the drums. The group energy amplifies it even further. It carries you to a place deep inside you, to that deep silence where all possibilities lie. It is a powerful and wonderful experience! I have been part of these workshops many times and it always seems to have a unique energy and to be something fresh and new each time. Thank you, Jim, for tapping into this process for us."-Mary Cogley, Irwin, PA
